Health Committee

Carrie Bridges and Helene Martin, Co-Chairs

Purpose/Description:

The mission of the Health Committee of the RICW is to enhance the health and improve the quality of life of women and girls in the state of Rhode Island. In support of this mission, the Health Committee regularly participates in activities such as educational conferences and outreach efforts. Committee members meet monthly to discuss common issues of interest, plan collaborative initiatives, and present the latest information on women’s health. The Health Committee also advises and assists the RICW on all health-related matters pertaining to women, including legislative initiatives related to health.

Accomplishments during FY 2006

The Health Committee Completed 8 outreach presentations about the RICW and Health Committee to health care providers, students and professionals. The presentations were to the following:

  • Participated in Presentation for Women’s Equality Day at the Veteran’s Hospital
  • Independent Women Pins distributed at the Color My World fashion show to promote healthy breast awareness to minority women
  • Presentation to the Health Department delegation
  • Presentation to the Albanian delegation
  • Presentation to the Thai delegation
  • Independent Women Pins distributed at the Minority Women in Healthcare Summit, sponsored by the Department of Health
  • Presentation on Access to Care at Women and Infants Hospital
  • Presentation to Salve Regina University nursing faculty

Additionally, The Health Committee sponsored three informational meetings:

  • Health committee meeting with St. Joseph’s hospital social services department
  • Human papillomavirus vaccine presentation
  • Health committee meeting with RI Department of Corrections rehabilitative services and medical staff to discuss gaps in service for incarcerated and recently released female inmates
