EXPLORING GENDER BIAS IN THE WORKPLACE

 STANDARD:

  • All students will be able to identify women (or men if they are underrepresented) who are leaders and achievers in the particular core content curriculum area.
  • All Students will be able to list strategies to overcome gender bias, stereotyping, and discrimination.

GRADE LEVEL: 9-12. Mathematics.

OBJECTIVE(S):

  • Students will utilize their reading and listening skills in identifying women leaders and achievers in core content curriculum areas.
  • Students will investigate gender bias, discrimination, and harassment at the workplace of their choice.
  • Students will develop strategies to overcome the gender bias, discrimination, and harassment at the workplace of their choice.

TIME: 2-3 class periods

MATERIALS: Participating companies in the local area

PROCEDURES:

  1. Students research a non-traditional career of their choice.
  2. Students gather research of the current statistics about the profession which focuses on the female/male ratios, the pay scales of the female verses the males.
  3. Recruit businesses and industry partners sensitive to equity issues (which are committed to equitable hiring practices)
  4. Provide mentoring opportunities for students placed in the occupational areas with very few same gender coworkers.
  5. Students job shadow at the job site, to compare the statistics found with the actual numbers at a job site.
  6. Students return to the classroom to compare their findings and relate these findings to their classmates.
  7. The students interview an anonymous person in that nontraditional career to gather information on a potential role model of a leader or achiever who has overcome any forms of gender bias.
  8. Students graph their findings with their class on a histogram to show the comparisons or differences among the many career choices that have been investigated.
