FEMALE MOVERS AND SHAKERS IN HISTORY

STANDARD: All students will be able to identify women (or men, if they are underrepresented) who are leaders and achiever in the particular core content curriculum area.

GRADE LEVEL: 9-12, Social Studies

OBJECTIVE(S): Students will be able to identify those women throughout the course of history (prehistory to modern day) that have left an impact on the world. Students will create a time line of important women in history.

TIME: 1-2 class periods

MATERIALS: World History Books, American History Books, white construction paper, rulers and markers

PROCEDURES:

  1. Divide students into six groups.
  2. Distribute World History books to 3 groups, and American History Books to 3 groups.
  3. Tell each group what time periods they are responsible to search (Ex: prehistory through Egypt.
  4. Instruct students to locate and record in their notebooks the the names, dates and events that were important to these women who became leaders and achievers in history.
  5. Distribute white construction paper, rulers and markers to each group. Tell students to create a time line for their era in history, putting the women leaders/achievers in a different color marker than the rest of the time period.

ASSESSMENT: The final product (time line) will evaluate your lesson.

HINTS: In dividing students, create two groups of females, two groups of males and 2 mixed groups. Observe any difference in the behavior of the groups.
