IS MY SCHOOL EQUITABLE?
By: Charlene J. Centracchio

STANDARD: All students will be able to recognize gender bias, stereotyping and discrimination in school materials, activities, and classroom instruction.

GRADE LEVEL: 9-12, Across the Curriculum

OBJECTIVE(S): Students will be able to evaluate the student handbook to determine whether or not it was written in gender/language equity terminology.

TIME: 1 class period

MATERIALS: Student Handbook

PROCEDURES:

  1. Distribute student handbooks to the class. Explain to students the concept of gender equity.
  2. Divide students into groups. Tell each group the section they are responsible to evaluate in the student handbook.
  3. Have students read sections and discuss the changes that would be necessary in order to make the student handbook equitable.

ASSESSMENT: Each group will then present their findings to the class. To take this lesson a step further, the class could volunteer to rewrite the handbook with the correct terms, thus evaluating the lesson.

HINTS: In dividing students, create two groups of females, two groups of males and 2 mixed groups. Observe any difference in the behavior of the groups.
