STRATEGIES FOR A SUCCESSFUL WORLD
By: Charlene J. Centracchio

STANDARD: All students will be able to list strategies to overcome gender bias, stereotyping and discrimination.

GRADE LEVEL: 9-12, Social Studies

OBJECTIVE(S): Students will brainstorm answers to six questions that will allow them to develop strategies to overcome gender bias, stereotyping, and discrimination in today’s society.

TIME: 1 class period

MATERIALS: Newsprint with prepared questions, tape, and markers.

PROCEDURES:

  1. Teacher prepares newsprint with the following questions at the top (one on each sheet):
    1. Why do people feel they are a victim of discrimination?
    2. What causes discrimination in society?
    3. Why are people stereotyped?
    4. Why are certain groups excluded from activities?
    5. What causes racism?
    6. Why are certain groups left out of the mainstream?
  1. Teacher tapes newsprint with questions to walls. Fold the bottom of the newsprint above the top so questions cannot be seen. Tape a marker to the wall.
  2. Divide students into groups. Tell them that they will be brainstorming answers to the questions on the newsprint. Assign one person to write answers. Tell students they will have 10 minutes to complete this activity. Tell them to start. At the end of 10 minutes, stop them.
  3. Have each group present their questions and answers to the class. Point out that each group had similar questions.
  4. Tell each qroup to take a second piece of newsprint and list at east 5 strategies to address what they cited as problems/answers to their questions.

ASSESSMENT: To evaluate the lesson, select one strategy from each group to be selected to implement in your own classroom or school.

HINTS: In dividing students, create two groups of females, two groups of males and 2 mixed groups. Observe any difference in behavior.
