EQUITABLE CAREERS
By: Charlene J. Centracchio

STANDARD: All students will be able to identify career areas which are nontraditional for their gender.

GRADE LEVEL: 7-12, Social Studies

OBJECTIVE(S): Students will be able to identify a list of careers that they would like to investigate during a career day. Students will separate the main list into four separate lists: traditional female careers, traditional male careers, nontraditional female careers, and nontraditional male careers.

TIME: 1 class period

MATERIALS: Newsprint, markers, notebooks and pens.

PROCEDURES:

  1. Divide class into groups. Explain that the school is thinking of having a career day. Ask them to create a list of careers that should be written on newsprint. Give them 10 minutes for this activity.
  2. Ask students to choose 3 careers from the group that they, as an individual, would want to learn more about and write them in their notebooks. Give them 5 minutes to do this.
  3. Ask students to separate the careers into categories of traditional female, traditional male, nontraditional female and nontraditional male careers, on newsprint. Give them 10 minutes to complete this activity.
  4. Ask students to look at the 3 careers that they chose and determine if they chose any that are considered nontraditional.
  5. Have students engage in discussion concerning their career choices if time permits.

ASSESSMENT: To evaluate the lesson, have students write an essay on what they learned from the lesson.

HINTS: In dividing students, create two groups of females, two groups of males and 2 mixed groups. Observe any difference in the behavior of the groups.
