Back to Lesson Plans || Back to Handbook Homepage

EARLY GREEK TIMES
By: Charlene J. Centracchio

STANDARD: All students will be able to identify women (or men, if they are underrepresented) who are leaders and achievers in the particular core content curriculum area.

GRADE LEVEL: 9-12, Social Studies

OBJECTIVE(S): Students will be able to evaluate which Greek City State, Sparta or Athens, was somewhat equitable in their time. Students will be able to prepare a list of what was equitable and what was not equitable for men and women during this time period.

TIME: 1-2 class periods

MATERIALS: World History Books

PROCEDURES:

  1. Divide students into groups.
  2. Distribute World History books. Tell students to look at the chapters concerning Greek History and to write down equitable situations in Sparta and then equitable situations in Athens.
  3. Have students create a list of what was equitable and not equitable for men and women during this time.
  4. Have students prepare their findings and present them to the other groups. Have students engage in discussion concerning whether or not they thought that Sparta or Athens was more equitable.

ASSESSMENT: To evaluate the lesson, ask students to respond in writing to the question, "Based upon what you have learned, if you lived in Ancient Greece, would you prefer to be a man or woman and why?"

HINTS: In dividing students, create two groups of females, two groups of males and 2 mixed groups. Observe any difference in the behavior of the groups.
