OBSERVING THE ROLES OF MALES AND FEMALES IN THE NURTURING OF THE YOUNG THROUGHOUT THE ANIMAL KINGDOM

STANDARD: All students will be able to explain the effects of gender bias, stereotyping and discrimination on learning, self esteem, relationships and behavior

GRADE LEVEL: All grades, Science

OBJECTIVE(S):

  • Students will identify roles of different species of males and females, including man, in the nurturing of the young.
  • Students will compare the roles of males and females in different species.
  • Students will draw conclusions about the traditional and nontraditional roles of human males and females through discussions and/or charts.

TIME: 1-2 class periods for film viewing; 1-2 periods for discussion or chart making.

MATERIALS:
Appropriate videos
Resources: National Geographic (www.nationalgeographic.com/), PBS (www.pbs.org/learn/tconnex ); Animal Dads by Sneed B. Collard III (for elementary) ISBN: 0-618-03299-1

PROCEDURES:

  1. Show the appropriate videos.
  2. Place students in groups of 2 3.
  3. Hand out an outline sheet for comparison of male and female roles in the nurturing process for different species.
  4. Ask students to compare these roles.
  5. Ask students to discuss how the roles of humans (males and females) have or have not changed.

HINTS:

  1. Set up some groups of all males, all females and some mixed.
  2. Try to show videos for at least two different animal species, i.e. gorillas penguins, wolves, etc. and for humans, try two time periods, i.e. 1990’s and 1960’s.
